What is third-wave Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP), and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) are all contemporary forms of third-wave Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), a modern development within CBT that builds on earlier approaches.

Traditional CBT often focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts. Third-wave approaches take this further by helping you change your relationship with your thoughts, emotions, memories, and other internal experiences. Rather than trying to eliminate distressing thoughts or feelings, third-wave CBT helps you learn how to respond to them differently so they have less impact on your life.

In therapy, we may explore patterns such as becoming stuck in self-critical thinking or trying to avoid difficult emotions. Instead of struggling with these experiences, you will learn how to step back from them, relate to them differently, and respond in ways that are more helpful and aligned with the life you want to live. This often involves developing skills such as breathing exercises, emotional openness, and practical behavioural strategies, alongside a greater understanding of how your patterns of thinking and responding have developed over time.

What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of third-wave Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) that focuses on helping you live a meaningful life while learning to handle difficult thoughts, feelings, and memories more effectively.

ACT is based on the idea that much of our distress comes not simply from what we think or feel, but from how we respond to these experiences, particularly when we get caught up in them or try to avoid them. Therapy, therefore, focuses on helping you develop psychological flexibility: the ability to stay present, open up to your experience, and take actions that reflect what truly matters to you.

ACT is an active and collaborative therapy: sessions often include practical exercises, reflection, and between-session practice. It is supported by a strong and growing evidence base and is widely used across a range of psychological difficulties.
